Biography

Sjaak Korsten (Helden, 1957) creates paintings, works on paper, objects, photographs, and installations. His works are poetic, intimate, and personal. Everyday objects and situations are isolated and placed in a different context so that they acquire a deeper poetic value. They depict the longing for beauty and truth. Korsten feels connected to Arte Povera, an art movement that emerged in Italy in the late 1960s and was known in the Netherlands as Fluxus or ZERO. Characteristic are the shabby materials such as branches, rags, shoe soles, etc. But also contrasts like gold leaf, which distances him from the hierarchical approach to materials. Korsten is fascinated by contrasts and the tension it causes when you bring them together in a work of art. His work is represented and presented by galleries in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Poland, and the United States and at art fairs such as TEFAF Maastricht, PAN Amsterdam, ART FAIR Cologne, etc. He has also had exhibitions in several museums such as Museum Bommel van Dam in Venlo, the CODA museum in Apeldoorn, and the ODA park in Venray.
